Cuomo Gives Cold Shoulder to New York’s Poor

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Institute for Energy Research President Thomas Pyle released the following statement responding to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s decision to ban hydraulic fracturing in New York:

“Governor Cuomo is clearly more interested in playing politics than improving his state’s sluggish economy or lowering its sky-high energy costs. His decision to prohibit hydraulic fracturing will deprive New Yorkers of their abundant energy resources, foregoing the opportunity to create jobs, generate revenue, and lower families’ heating and electric bills. “Cuomo is giving a cold shoulder to the poor and elderly, many of whom will struggle to heat their homes this winter. Last year’s polar vortex should have been a wake-up call that New York needs more reliable energy, but instead the governor appears content to simply hope for the best. “The benefits of hydraulic fracturing are clear and well documented. Across the country, states are unlocking their energy resources and their economies are thriving as a result. Governor Cuomo doesn’t have to look any further than neighboring Pennsylvania to see the wisdom of responsible energy development. “The contrast could not be more clear-cut: if you like affordable energy, you won’t love New York.”
