The 'Safe Fun' phase (advising and securing alcohol beverage outlets) of my Safety creation theory includes working bars—and all that entails.
Given the level of sudden, disproportionate violence in post pandemic nightlife, I'm extremely selective where I create Safe Fun.
Full disclosure: The alcohol beverage outlet threat environment before the pandemic was no cake walk either.
As I caution younger protectors in this field, " why take Baghdad risks without Baghdad pay?"
Most bar owners and event promoters simply aren't paying their protectors what private military contractors overseas earn to navigate similar danger.
These hundred ’thousandaires’ cry about how they can't pay security top dollar while often paying top dollar on multiple girlfriends and steady supplies of recreational drugs.
That's why I warn bar protectors to be very careful risking it all for peanuts.
Case in point: At the invitation of a buddy, otherwise I wouldn't have done it, I worked the door at a bar in New Orleans Central Business District or CBD. Its lack of Black proprietors has me uncharitably referring to it as "the Caucasian Business District", mockery aimed squarely at local liberal leaders' inconclusive, inclusive rhetoric.
Much of my time was spent scanning body language of passersby, looking for peak agitation announcing shooting or street fights may occur.
The tourism industry doesn't advertise this inconvenient truth but downtown New Orleans high priced province involuntarily hosts high crime too.
Holidays and game nights for professional sports teams were times when I'd be on heightened alert because street pirates use big occasions as cover to intimidate, rob, burgle vehicles, car jack and even fire upon human targets.
One time I executed a rapid door locking procedure I'd designed and warned everyone inside the bar on a pro football game night. This was seconds after I saw someone with rifle in hand walking beside long line of cars in front of us.
Note to protectors and staff at alcohol beverage outlets:
If place can't be quickly locked to keep out trouble you're running an unfair risk of being trapped with nowhere to go. The owner can get new workers. Workers however, can't get new lives.
Nothing happened that memorable game night but it, like area shooting incidents researched before-sometimes during!-work, illustrated very real nearby perils. (Bourbon Street bouncer accused of shooting two men after asking them to leave)
This recent case of a bouncer on world famous Bourbon St who shot two patrons is a head scratcher. Protectors there are often enforcer types known to be heavy handed but not to the point of gun play.
It happened shortly before Essence Fest and Fourth of July and experience suggests victims may have been violent or threatened to shoot him. Lots of unanswered questions here.
I wonder if his likely self defense claim will fly in our anti use of deadly force environment?
Definitely following this case as more details emerge.
A Bourbon St. bouncer shooting two patrons he asked to leave strongly suggests there's more to the story.
They routinely escort out or forcibly eject too many customers for this not to bear further scrutiny.
At any rate fellow fighters, should you go out to have some fun, or provide Safe Fun, it goes without saying, do so as carefully as possible.
