“As the United States - as a world leader - we are very good about telling other countries that they must accept refugees from Syria or Ethiopia or Darfur. But, when it comes to a humanitarian crisis on our own border - involving children, no less - you hear these nativist, isolationist voices saying 'oh, just ship them all back, send them all back.'” “...And what’s clear is that each one of these cases needs to be evaluated. They need to have due process.”
“I might add that a big problem with why these children are coming too is because their parents have been here. If we were able to pass comprehensive immigration reform - something that a majority of Americans, regardless of political party, believe in - that many of these children would qualify to be reunited with their parents, and their parents could come out of the shadows and get on a pathway toward citizenship.”See how that works? We shouldn't find the people who are already here illegally and deal with that problem. That would be ridiculous. If you're here illegally, you should be rewarded for your trespass! How does a nice family reunion sound? If you want citizenship, we can arrange that too. Oh, and the next time thousands of illegals stream into the U.S.? We'll get to do it all over again, because Democrats will make sure that we continue to do absolutely nothing about securing our border. The terminology of the left is fun to watch. When one thing doesn't work, they just shift gears and come up with something new. Just as the disprovable "global warming" morphed into the unprovable "climate change," the ridiculous "racism" charge is shifting into a nebulous battle cry of "natvism" and "isolationism." The playbook in action.
