Thanks for dropping in to see us this morning, and come in anytime. You’re always welcome, here in the Kitchen!
I did a column while Deb was gone titled, “
An opinion on Life.” This in regards to someone in Seattle providing links to Deb basically stating that disciplining a child leads to all types of emotional, intellectual, even sexual problems to the child. My response was something along the lines of…BULL!
Deb had written an article stating that her Daddy had whipped her and her brother as well. This not being what her story was about, it was about fond memories of her youth, but in telling the story she had to say she was punished. Why? How ‘bout she and her brother had done wrong.
This being said, the response of mine, to Seattle’s response to Deb, was well received, and received well enough that I’d really like to share them with everyone that comes in today. Deb says to tell everyone that commented she really appreciates the response as well, and thanks you for them too.
God Bless you all!

I find political correctness to be a great excuse for cowards to get out of saying just what is on their mind. It is also a tool used to stifle free speech.
The first amendment is under attack. If you have an opposing opinion you get labeled politically incorrect, racist, or it is called hate speech.
Maybe my opinion and complete disdain and disgust for political correctness is because my butt was whooped more than once when I was a child and it warped my mind.

*Thanks Bill, and what you say is very true. We both MUST have warped minds then my friend, cause like I said, I felt it my duty as a child to “test” my parents and believe you me…they met every challenge I presented them “head-on!”

Just wanted to drop a few words of support for your comments in that article. As a 56 year old(ok, 57 in less than a month), and like yourselves I can look back at my life as a child and the times I was on the end of discipline...yes, spanking too and say that I had no fear or dread of those I received such discipline from. That would be my mother and grand parents. We lived with them when we were little.
I stopped at the Esso gas bar several weeks ago here in Port Colborne and a few other customers were in there. We got to talking about the shooting in Arizona and the terrible things people do and what were the causes. We all agreed that society and we as parents who follow what society tells us are in reality creating monsters! We aren’t suppose to spank little Johnny when he misbehaves. We therefore indulge our children. They don’t learn personal responsibility or self discipline. They grow up thinking they can do anything they bloody well please regardless of how it impacts others. I believe this is a logical outgrowth of the permissive attitude our society now embraces. Spare the rod, spoil the child? Written 3 thousand years ago! They had it right. We aren’t getting smarter. We are becoming more stupid!
Cheers… Craig
*Thumbs up, Craig, excellent read, and great points…thanks so much, buddy! It sure is nice to see that I haven’t “lost my mind” in regards to this subject. I gotta tell you, when we’re in a restaurant as an example, and people are letting their kids just RUN WILD, it drives me up the wall! My Dad had a saying, “Son, I’m fixin’ to drop kick you through the goalposts of life!” Now he never did “drop kick” me, but he did tear my tail up on numerous occasions, but once again, I had done something I KNEW was wrong the minute I did it, plus he disciplined me outta love for me! Please come back and visit with us again, Craig!

Dub and Deb, enjoyed your article about whipping and the boots out of the bus. You are a couple much like Patty and myself. We had 5 boys and 1 girl, and now have 26 grandkids and growing. I'm was born and raised on a Texas farm and Patty in San Antonio. I, like you, raised my kids as I was raised. Spare the rod spoil the child. Not certain if the phrase was correct but the meaning has always been correct. If my parents or my grandparents didn't keep me in line or my 3 sisters, we would have taken Texas apart, well maybe not to that degree, but we were always inventing play. We had no money, but food was always available, which is normal for a farm. I was always trying to push the envelope so spanking was just part of keeping me in toe like breaking a horse.
Then I grew up joined the Navy and the same thing prevailed there, only by then I was in control and became a leader of men and knew how to get the best out of them and make them better sailors and better citizens. Leaders are invented they are created, and that means both discipline and showing them the proper way of leading, and sometimes that means you have to discipline someone who gets out of control. Of course that doesn't always work, but a person with reasonable mental capacity knows right from wrong and they become better than they once were. I've seen some of the best men and women come from a radical background and after guiding them and giving them purpose they became the best of the best, but not after pushing themselves to the brink of disaster, but then they would change, and from that point on, they developed into what one would call a person of purpose with an understanding of what we all are here for. It had to start somewhere.
I've found out those that had no respect at home, no direction and really no love and control over them by their elders ended up with future and really no potential to excel in anything, which speaks volumes on many of today's citizens of the U.S. I do hope it will change, but as long as we have those that protested in the 60s against almost anything that they didn't seem to think was part of their fragmented life, bring that thinking into today's life style we will never become the country we once were. Those protesters are today's leaders in government (see John Kerry) and professors at universities teaching our children(see Weather Underground).
No one is perfect, but when I hear today's parents complaining about how their children are out of control, and then I see these kids having all the luxuries that kids didn't even earn, and have no restrictions on them as to their life styles, then the way I brought up my kids is validated. My kids are grown, all college degrees, all professionals, and so will their kids, and they were all military brats and getting a spanking for getting way out of line was something they expected. Was I wrong, ask my kids.
No I don't condone beating or any harm brought to a child, but if anyone is stupid enough to think spanking is abuse then they must have been brought up by Dr. Spoke and those in the television generation who believed whatever was told them on how to live their lives must have been gospel. That my friends are people who were also brought up wrong and can't think for themselves which seems to be today's general concept.
Thanks for letting me rant. Enjoyed your post. I'm a journalist and former managing editor of a national publication and a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, and I can contribute my success to my family who knew that this man needed some guidance, and thanks to them I made it, even when I got spanked. Now that I'm thinking about it, there's a board in my high school, that had my name burned onto it by the football coach. Bad grades, I got licks, thus I graduated, reached my Masters Degree and without the coaches corporal punishment with that pine board, I would probably not be what I am today. Thanks coach! Funny, he always did it at the end of school, by the outside school bus stop where he knew all the young ladies would be. Spanking and mind control, it worked. I married one of the young ladies that was watching me get my licks. I guess I should thank the coach of her as well…. Billy
*Man…thanks for your support Billy, it is appreciated. You’re spot on in regards to the sixties radicals, now being in power today as well. Can you believe how far our Country has regressed? It’s sickening to Deb and I!
Thank God for people such as yourself Billy, you understand fully the importance of rearing a child with discipline being a way of life…if you do wrong there are consequences to pay, this not only as a child but throughout their entire lives as well! Once more, this is done by the parents through love for their child!
As far as your “rant,” as you say…you feel free to visit with us again and “rant” all you’d care to rant. This Country needs more “rants” such as these! Thank you Billy, you’re already a friend in Dub’s book! (Deb’s as well…you gotta keep the womenfolk involved, Billy, or look out buddy)!

Make no mistake, the miscreants know that a child who does not learn discipline and responsibility is a child who will never learn to respect themselves and respect others.
If you can converse with the drug addicted little girl selling her body for her next fix, you can bet your bottom dollar that she does not know discipline nor responsibility.
Miscreants do their job well, and if you discipline a child, that child can go to school and get all the help they want to “teach my parents a real lesson” and the next thing you know there is someone from law enforcement at your door, backed up by a pack of “ninja turtles”, with his pistol pointed right at you. Now you have a little brat who rules the roost and who has started that long slide down into the abyss.
As I said, the miscreants know their job well, and they are recruiting 24/365 because that is their nature.
How I long for the days when the Sheriff and his deputies were decent and true friends. My Sheriff taught me defensive driving just because that was his nature, and I know for a certainty that in at least one case his lessons saved my life.
By the way he was “One of Those Christians” which the world and the miscreants love to hate.
*John thanks for taking the time to comment, and your very first sentence frankly, pretty much wraps it all up, great summary to one major problem in this Country… our children, their values, and their education!
Then in your last sentence, you covered the bases in regards to our religion. If they can stop or somehow do away with our faith…you have no foundation to believe in, they’ve destroyed your will, by destroying your faith. It’s my belief we’re living in truly historic times in regards to our country.
Thank you again, John, and please come back!

Very good article. We do need to revisit the rearing of a child. What is proper can only be discovered in the final product. Do we build character and conscience as parents by failing a child in his most needful of times or leave it to society to later correct? Parenting is also a "trickle down" learning experience that we modify according to our individual experiences and pass on to our own children. Within a generation we can go from social butterfly to pariah factory when values are not taught early and identified as lacking when there is a real chance of making a meaningful change.
I will share this story about my life. My father’s parents lived in a small home in the country and were still using an outhouse, planting a multiple acre garden, milking the family cow, raising chickens and putting up food for the winter when I was born. He was one of four boys and an adopted girl who grew up in a strict environment where a mistake could cost you your life and the church and grange served as the social services division. If you were a good person you were entitled to respect, that was all.
All my father’s brothers had children and my grandparents had as many on a weekend as they could manage and were treated to a great learning and loving experience. Strict meant you got told right from wrong when you did wrong, received fair warning of the escalating consequences should you persist.
I had one cousin who just did not respond to the reality that if you insisted on violating rules you were going to learn at some point. He was told numerous times not to do things which he would immediately do as if in contempt. He had reached the point where the raising of awareness was done on his bottom side and all of us kids just would talk as he was being awakened. We would ask him why do you do the things you do. He just seemed to not care. One day we were laying pieces of grass on an electric fence and feeling the jolt through the grass. This boy came running up and said hey what ya doin and we all looked at each other knowing that whatever we were doing he would find a way to get us in trouble so I said were peeing on the wire, try it. From that day forward he had an entirely different view since it was his showing off that was the problem and it finally got the correction it needed. He was always a guy you couldn't trust but he learned if he was going to have friends he couldn't make trouble for them. He developed a conscience albeit a small one.
*Glad ya liked it, A pen, really! Thanks so much.
First I gotta’ ask, “You really didn’t do that in regards to that boy an the electric fence did ya’, cause that’s just wrong!” Now that I’ve told ya’ it was wrong, and it was, let me also say WHAT A GREAT IDEA, and I’d a done the same thing myself, if I’d a thought about it! That’s great…I love it! I bet you “lit him up!” You’d a fit right in with our bunch!
Quickly though, I’d like to say that we do need to revisit child rearing. If we don’t we’ll eventually lose our children and our Republic as well. This is all orchestrated, as John earlier was alluding to in our “schools teaching our parents a real lesson.” Look at the last Presidential election, Louis Farrahkan proclaimed “the messiah has captured the youth…” This is what is being done through education, anti-parent rhetoric, and what else, political correctness! When I say “Beware” that is exactly what I mean!
Thanks again, A pen, and look forward to hearing more from you as we go along!
*These next two comments are from John and A pen again. I’d just like to tell them both thanks again, and they have absolutely no idea how much we appreciate their taking time out of their day to comment! Thanks again, guys, and to all else as well!!

Counting eggs, truth and why it matters.
As a youngster it became my turn to fetch the night’s egg lay. I was given the basket and told to take care with it coming back and off I went to find the eggs. It wasn't a hard job but for a kid it was a fun one even though all the hens were shut in at night and should have laid their eggs in their nesting boxes. In a few minutes I had fourteen eggs and feeling proud I brought them in where grandma took a count. She sat me down and asked if I had looked everywhere. Yes I said. I had never taken to telling a lie but I was going to learn why it is important to not lie. She took me to the hen house and counted hens then moved each that was still in a box and lo there was another egg. She asked if I'd checked that box and I said yes but there was no hen there when I was looking. Satisfied with that we went back to the house where the care was taken to explain why truth was so important.
I had returned with a short count and she knew there should be fifteen.
I felt the concern as it was a point that would make me a liar had I only found fourteen and was trusted that was the count. She said these eggs we sell some and keep some and one egg less might mean we would not have all we needed because she would not short the folks who relied on their eggs from us. Then, it may have been a warning that a hen was sick which could spread and kill off all the chickens. A very bad thing and a missing egg could result in an immediate alarm at that prospect. Then there may have been a breach of the house by a raccoon or weasel. Another alarm raising immediate action. Then it might have been the rooster was ailing or simply a hen past prime. All those things she could tell from an egg count she would trust me to make. I became a very good egg counter, learned what trust means and why a lie can be so harmful even if it were about one little egg. The consequences of a lie may be equal to those of doing a slack job as well. Your neighbors may not know of a lie but the consequences can not be hidden and may reach further than you think. Another lesson I learned and an exercise in conscience. In comparison to my cousin you might begin to see how he would become a problem for himself if he sold eggs and for the community that relied on them.

A Pen “Strict meant you got told right from wrong when you did wrong, received fair warning of the escalating consequences should you persist”.
THAT is a key to good discipline. The child MUST know what the rules are and what the punishment is. I also found that it was a very good idea to explain to them the reason for each rule. There were certain problems which meant that your backside was smartened up with the smartening paddle. That paddle was very carefully made so that it would not bruise the child but would make the skin sting like a “hundred hornets”. When I finished making the paddle, I FIRMLY swatted myself the full length of my thigh.
I can attest to you that it was a very good smartening paddle and I can remember these many, many years later just how much that smarted. I did not bruise from that swat which was by far the hardest that paddle was ever used and fortunately I did not have to use it but on rare occasions. Since I had been raised in the “educational” community and my Aunt was a National Director of the NEA, I learned early on what the “game plan” was.
I would spend time going over, with each of our children, what was taught that day and then carefully explain what the teacher “truly meant” (de-program the child where necessary) and also taught them to memorize word for word what the teacher said following the words “Now I don’t want you to tell your parents what I am about to tell you”.
You would be amazed at just how much a child can remember WORD FOR WORD. I dealt with the teacher and the principal as needed. I would use their classmates who used drugs with words such as “do you remember ____ before he/she got into drugs?” And they nearly always did. “I surely feel sorry for ____ because he/she has thrown their life away and for what?” “To become as dumb as a box of rocks?” “That is surely something to aspire to”. The child had seen how their life had fallen apart.
Results: I have 5 children, 19 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren (27 on the runway and 2 in the hanger) who have ALL stayed away from drugs, and I am ever so thankful to God for all the help He has given me.

‘Ridin Out The Recession With Dub and Deb in “Miz Judi’s Kitchen’!
Note to Readers: There are a few things that Dub doesn’t know but one thing he does know is that the word ‘Riding’ (as in Riding Out the Recession) is spelled with a ‘g’ at the end. But Dub not only walks the walk, but speaks like he is: down home, true blue, and plain speakin’ country folk.
Dub and Deb are both native Floridians, live in Central Florida, and run a small business as well. They have five children, and seven grandchildren.
Both love to cook, love to laugh, grow a garden, and generally try to “aggravate” most anyone around them basically…all in good fun, of course!
