I walked a moonlit Christmas Trail
I walked a moonlit Christmas trail
by majestic stands of sleeping trees
no stirring sound through hill and dale
no echoed words nor whispering breeze
Til the ridge of crested elms parted
and the smallest hamlet came to few
as the candlelit mass had just started
within stained glassed amber hue
I dusted snow from an old split rail
in a hollow some furlongs hence
a welcome break from my wary trail
sitting upon that meandering fence
In the stillness of the frosty dales
waltzed the enchanting organs rills
as the choir sang ascending scales
climbing to heaven from rolling hills
A shooting star streaked the sky
burning long and blazing bright
to Bethlehem in my minds eye
Oh Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht
Reflecting upon whence I came
meandering far beyond my mortal view
no path or trail that bore my name
no compass or map had led me through
Turning to ponder untraveled trails
the untrodden ways of pristine white
unmarred by our earthly travails
so many forks to decide the night
Where will I find my guiding light
for Stella Polaris to guide me along
the musings of a Christmas Eve’s night
to your distant hearth where I belong.
