Imagine Your Favorite Teacher Facing A School Shooter

As the Bend, Oregon mass shooting makes its rounds around the country, a sad scenario just came to me.

Imagine if my favorite teacher had faced a school shooter one sunny day during class decades ago?

My favorite teacher was a jovial PhD holder with deep knowledge of political science who'd authored definitive texts on his field of specialization. He taught classes at my small college and later left to join the faculty of a big name university.

Students loved and revered him for his passion and igniting scholastic fire in them.

'Doc,' as we affectionately called him, would've put his chalk down and challenged an armed intruder despite being unarmed. His first, and possibly last thoughts, would've been his students safety.

Students could've either fled or rushed to summon campus police since cell phones hadn't come out yet.

Thankfully, my favorite teacher didn't face that in the late 1980s when school shootings were the stuff of pulp fiction.

Unfortunately, in the 21st century on that same campus, one of our deans was carjacked at gun point and the Student Center was the site of a murder years ago.

So, I repeat the question: imagine your favorite teacher facing a school shooter.

Unarmed.

Unafraid.

Or if afraid, still willing to offer themselves as a human shield for terrified students.

That's what somebody's favorite teacher has faced in the past--and likely will also face in the future.

Some of them who are willing to be trained ought to be armed should school shooters storm their schools.
It beats the alternative.
