Clarence Thomas raised him 'as a son.' Now he's facing 25-plus years on weapons and drug charges. (Business Insider)
The Black world US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas (hereafter, the Justice), and later I, grew up in was one where most took pains not to embarrass our families and by extension, our community, in a judgemental society.
Was it a perfect world? Not by a long shot. But it was one where the good name of those who raised and sacrificed for you was worth upholding.
Through this nearly non existent lens I look at a tragedy involving a grandnephew given unequalled exposure to a life literally one hundred eighty degrees in the other direction from where these charges strongly suggest he's headed.
Liberal sisters and brothers, and enabling others, preach investment in young Black men as the cure to crime and despair in our ranks.
I'm not opposed to investing in young brothers. I wholeheartedly support it as our best investment. However, I do so with one caveat: choose those who truly want to do better.
All the investment in the world can be undone by still choosing violent community treason, as alleged in this case.
The Justice did his communal duty as an older Black man by taking a younger one into his home to offer a new life trajectory.
Incidentally, he did what many critics belonging to an enabling ideology refuse to do while demanding more public dollars for impersonal state-run social services, private programs and public schools.
He took a relative into his home. Regardless of ideological and jurisprudence differences, reasonable critics can agree this speaks volumes about his character--stories outlining gifts from billionaires duly noted.
Investment in young Black men is necessary. So is avoiding letting down those investing in you..
Regardless of the outcome in this case and some divergent views, I thank the Justice for trying to change a life trajectory using his heart and wallet.
Few do.
