Mitch McConnell needs two things to happen if he is to become Senate Majority Leader. First, of course, Republicans need to take the majority. But second, he needs to win his own re-election race over Alison Lunderan Grimes. Up until the last few days, that strangely seemed like a dicier proposition than the first.
But according to USA Today, voters are breaking in McConnell's direction in recent days.
I realize McConnell gives conservatives a lot of reasons to feel frustrated. Case in point: Recently implying that he would not allow a reconciliation vote (needing only 51 votes) to repeal ObamaCare, followed just days later by a reversal in which he said he would. McConnell seems a little too steeped in Washington's conventional thinking for those of us who want an aggressive battle against liberal policies.
But Kentucky is a pretty red state, and it's hard to imagine its voters are willing to piss away the chance to take the Senate by electing the ridiculous Ms. Grimes. Hopefully by the end of the day we have confirmation that they are not.
