Let Jay Carney make one thing perfectly clear: Obama is no Nixon
The Richard Nixon comparisons seem to write themselves—much to the joy of Republicans working to cement the association between President Barack Obama and the former scandal-plagued president.
But when asked at Tuesday's press briefing about the White House's reaction to the recent Nixon comparisons, press secretary Jay Carney suggested those who made them were wrong.
"People who make those kinds of comparisons need to check their history," he said.
Oh yes, let's do!
Using the IRS to harass political opponents? Check. Enemies list? Check. Spying on the news media? Check. Paranoid? Tell me what you see. And hey, how did we know about Romney's "47 percent" comment? Didn't someone secretly record it? But wait, you say, that guy was acting on behalf of Mother Jones, not the Obama campaign.
There's a difference?
I can understand the objection to the comparison on a certain level, though. Nixon knew what he was doing in foreign policy, so in that respect, it is certainly true that Obama is no Nixon.
But whether he is or isn't matters less than the fact that he's even being forced to deny it. It's basically the 21st Century equivalent of having to insist you're not a crook.
Ah well. One way or another, the day will come when we won't have Barack Obama to kick around anymore.
