My background as an urban security person combined with anti crime activism to provide a hybrid humanitarianism I call “free security.”
Free security is pro bono protection provided by decent people. In a non-economy like this one, it’s in greater demand since waiting to get paid means waiting in vain or worse, not assisting people in need. Recently realized free security opportunities include: New Years Eve 2014, while en route to-ironically-a paid assignment, I witnessed a hit & run which flipped the victims vehicle upside down in front of my residence! Miraculously, the driver was unharmed- and very upset! His passenger-a rattled dog-took off down the street. In short order, I called 911 and while first responders worked, also contacted his girl friend-thanks to a neighbor who googled her work number-so she learned her car was totaled-and pet lost-while she worked. Later, at the club I originally was headed toward, I sent a friend a Happy New Year text message. The good Samaritan who found her smart phone responded. I coordinated its return and was handsomely rewarded with a free muffin from the pastry section at her job. Last week, a custodian friend I check on alerted a young man frantically asking about his lost wallet that a woman had just exited with it. We followed and saw her return it- another realized free security moment! It seems 2015 will be a great year for providing free security. When discussing this type of activism I ask people, “Is a stranger worth securing for free?” My answer is a resounding yes! This is done by decent people worldwide for no other reason than than it’s the right thing to do. And guess what political junkies- it doesn’t cost tax payers anything!
