Poll shows Canadians want Liberal leader to oppose carbon tax

OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released Leger polling showing 60 per cent of Canadians want the next leader of the Liberal Party to oppose the carbon tax.

“This poll should be a wake-up call for anyone who wants to be the next prime minister: Canadians want you to oppose the carbon tax,” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director. “Taxpayers have trust issues, so if Liberal leadership hopefuls want Canadians to believe they oppose the carbon tax, then they must push the government to scrap the carbon tax now.”

The Leger poll asked Canadians if they think the next Liberal Party leader should support or oppose the carbon tax. Results of the poll show:

• 60 per cent say oppose the carbon tax
• 19 per cent say support the carbon tax
• 21 per cent are unsure

Among those decided on the issue, 76 per cent of Canadians said the next Liberal Party leader should oppose the carbon tax.

The federal carbon tax is set to increase to 21 cents per litre of gasoline, 25 cents per litre of diesel and 18 cents per cubic metre of natural gas on April 1.

“Canadians shouldn’t have to pay the carbon tax on one more home heating bill or one more trip to the gas station,” Terrazzano said. “The federal government can and should end the carbon tax immediately, and that’s exactly what anyone who wants to be the next prime minister should be pushing for.”

The CTF recently released another Leger poll showing 64 per cent of Canadians want the federal government to immediately suspend the carbon tax.
