There was a time in this country when, if a prominent member of an administration had done what you're about to see, people would have been angry. A supposed truth-teller laughing at the concept of transparency from his position behind the State Department podium would have sparked outrage. Sadly, those days are long gone. We've been lied to so many times, about so many things and with such spectacular hubris, that no one bats an eye when the mask slips. “Welcome to the State Department,” says Deputy State Department spokesman Mark Toner. “I think we have some interns in the back. Welcome. Good to see you in this exercise in transparency and democracy.”
Obviously, he can barely finish that last sentence (and bursts into uproarious laughter) because he knows his entire job falls under the heading of "paid liar." I'd love to say that, one day, his chickens will come home to roost. I wish I could believe we were still a country that expected our leadership to tell the truth and that they would be subject to punishment when they didn't. Sadly, that's just not the case. I'm not even going to waste your time with the whole "most transparent administration in history" thing. If this makes your blood boil, congratulate yourself. You're part of a shrinking minority. A group of throwbacks who remember the days when integrity was valued. ...There's not enough of you to matter.
