This week's art news: New book by eminent botanical artist
An eminent Dorset botanical artist is celebrating the publication of her fourth book.
Sally Pinhey from Upwey, Weymouth has written
The Botanical Illustrator’s Handbook published by Crowood Press.
The handbook takes a closer look at how to portray the riches of the botanical world accurately.
“It tackles and explains many of the difficulties that artists encounter so they can extend and expand their choice of subject matter,” explains Sally, a freelance horticultural and garden illustrator for over 20 years. In this book she offers new insights and a fresh approach to the wonders of botanical illustration.
The book provides advice on labelling and quality of paper and choice of pencils, paints and brushes. There are also techniques for the mixing and handling of greens, chapters on magnification, managing detail and using scale bars. Additionally there are instructions for using perspective techniques and painting complex structures such as pine cones and umbellifers and tricky details such as hairs.
Other books illustrated by Sally include:
