Will the new policy last forever? How long will it take for the country’s manufacturing sector to reap its rewards? And how did the White House generate the rates? 44% on Sri Lanka? 37% on Bangladesh? Who came up with those numbers?

We decided to cut through the noise and go straight to the source: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Tucker traveled to Washington shortly after the tariff announcement to interview the secretary and get the full rundown on the administration’s thinking behind its bold plan.

Scott Bessent tells Tucker:

“[Donald Trump] has promised the American workers that the old standard of living can come back. Over the past at least 20 years since the China shock, but more like the past 30, [we’ve had] these massive distributional problems. The coasts have done great, but the middle of the country has seen quality of life [declines], life expectancy decline, [and] they don’t think their children are going to do better than they are. A lot of people don’t care. But President Trump cares.”
