Banning drive-throughs: we have to keep just one

A British Columbia municipal councillor introduced a motion to ban drive-through businesses from opening in his bailiwick of North Vancouver. The proposed bylaw also calls for preventing the only existing drive-through restaurant from ever expanding.

In case anyone hasn’t yet guessed the purpose of the motion, it is to reduce greenhouse gases and save the planet from what the trendy are convinced is certain and total annihilation. Councillor Sam Schecter is not the first politician to suggest that drive-throughs be banned and will certainly not be the last. The idea has been floated by the socialists who currently occupy Toronto City Hall. What is absolutely mind boggling is how these drive-throughs manage to still exist. So why haven’t Toronto and other jurisdictions already moved to get rid of these planet killers? It can’t be because the politicos care about private property or businesses. Private property – you can’t even cut down a tree on your own property in the Peoples Republic of Toronto. And as for businesses, they constitute “the rich” that socialists love to tax to death in order to distribute their hard earned money to those who refuse to work, often making that decision as a “lifestyle choice”. Certainly the city mothers have little regard for businesses that are plagued with problems such as the homeless sleeping in front of their establishments and harassing their customers. Eventually many of these businesses make their way to 905 country and the city pays little attention. As much as these councillors detest business, they hate cars even more. If they had their way, the evil automobile would be banned for the city proper and those who don’t want to ride the overcrowded public transit system will just have to buy a bike. Gridlock is a major problem in the city, but this council has no real plan on how to minimize if not end it. They’re quite willing to slap a new tax on those that own cars, but do nothing to prohibit idling in drive-through lineups. Failure to crack down on drive-throughs cannot be because the politicians don’t care about the environment. These Al Gore/David Suzuki worshippers have always been eager to jump on the global warming bandwagon. It makes them feel good about themselves – they care. Toronto even has an anti-idling bylaw where the environment police can ticket motorists who idle their cars for more than three minutes. The anti-idling bylaw however does not apply to drive-through establishments any more than it does to empty buses that idle in front of donut shops in the morning when the drivers line up to buy coffee. It’s not even a question of money that Toronto is constantly begging from the provincial and federal governments. How much can an anti-drive-through bylaw cost? It wouldn’t have to be enforced the way other anti-people bylaws need to be enforced. We won’t need a whole slew of drive-through police. So it is really hard to understand how drive-through establishments have lasted this long. There can really be only one explanation – the councillors themselves love and patronize (probably with our money) these various drive-through restaurants. If their motto isn’t “do as I say, not as I do” it should be. There is nothing quite as funny as a Tim Horton’s with 50 cars lined up while the parking lot is virtually empty and one or two people inside the restaurant waiting to buy coffee. Drive-through restaurants are an excellent symbol of our current culture. It is instructive to watch a generation of lazy overweight people, who are simply unwilling to get out of their cars even when they can save time in doing so. And many of those who wait patiently in their idling automobiles waiting for a cup of coffee are the same ones who constantly bemoan the impending death of all that we know from global warming. If drive-throughs are ultimately banned, hopefully we will wind up like North Vancouver will if Councillor Schechter’s motion is successful – we’ll have at least one left that will stand as a constant reminder of early 21st century society.
