Detroit police chief lauds 'empowered' gun owners who are defending their homes and families

While Detroit's massive crime rate means the city has become sadly inured to news of violent crime, something interesting has started to happen there. Over the last few months, Motown has been witness to a new phenomenon. Home owners, fed up with living in perpetual victimhood, are fighting - and shooting - back.
More importantly, they have the support of Detroit's top cop. From the Detroit News (where, in the interest of full disclosure, I also write)
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said at a press conference last week that in his 37-year career, he’s never seen as many homeowners defending themselves by shooting intruders. Craig told The News in January he felt the crime rate could be lowered if more “good Americans” were armed, because he said criminals would think twice about attacking.

“It does appear more and more Detroiters are becoming empowered,” Craig said. “More and more Detroiters are getting sick of the violence. I know of no other place where I’ve seen this number of justifiable homicides. It’s interesting that these incidents go across gender lines.”
When I first started writing for Herman Cain, I published a piece arguing that gun control was most detrimental to law abiding citizens (especially minority women) who were living in low-income, high-crime, areas. If you're in a nice cushy suburb, the odds are that crime rates are low, police respond quickly, and your chances of becoming a statistic are much lower. If you're living in the inner city - Detroit in particular - the danger is greater, self-defense is a more constant necessity, and police response times are longer. As the saying goes, "when seconds count, help is only minutes away." Chief Craig understands that. We're not eager for more death and destruction, but we do want the innocent to be able to care for their homes, their families, and their lives. “People who are faced with a dangerous situation are taking matters into their own hands,” Craig said. “We’re not advocating violence; we’re advocates of not being victims. We’re advocates of self-protection. We want people to be safe. “This should be a message to those who continue to perpetuate violence on Detroiters that enough is enough. You’ve got to be concerned about good Detroiters who aren’t going to stand for it,” Craig said. “Detroiters are fed up and they are taking action.” Refreshing, no? We spend a lot of time complaining about inept, corrupt, and arrogant public officials who trash the 2nd Amendment at every opportunity. In fact, James Craig used to be a gun control supporter. He appears to have seen the light. When someone gets it right, we like to point it out. Way to go, Chief Craig.
