When I say I have a 'war outside of my door,' meaning immediate vicinity and nationally, cases like this are what I mean:
'None of that should have happened': Teen girl killed Sonic Drive-In manager after she tried to use counterfeit money, (Law and Crime).
Even in today's riotous retail regime, Sonic drive-in restaurants don't come to mind as high risk locations.
Tragically, that wasn't the case even a female teen shot and killed a San Antonio, Texas worker who refused to accept counterfeit money she presented as payment.
Outraged over being denied a chance to defraud, she chose deadly force.
This case reminds me of shouting matches and menacing I've encountered during advocacy and while creating safety at work.
I was told of a plot years ago to 'jump' (attack) me because of publicly defending a White homeowner who shot a nocturnal Black teen burglar shortly after the George Zimmerman acquittal.
They didn't do it for fear I was armed.
Wise choice.
I recall a mentally ill regular at a liberal-led building where I was head of security who threatened to strike me with his upraised wooden staff.
He was informed the result would be hospitalization and arrest if he hit me. Staff holder departed without incident.
Another time I had to mobilize and publicize a repeat trespasser who threatened to kill me. Death threat maker was eventually arrested after I moved heaven and earth to do so.
I even had an armed security officer brandish his firearm on camera following my chewing him out for disrespectful comments about a lady friend.
Despite the best efforts of a hostile executive director, the security officer was eventually arrested.
On a satisfying side bar, the executive director who covered up for him was fired last year for embezzlement.
Lastly, I offer as a recent 'hood warfare' exhibit an angry 2025 passenger who wanted to fight each time I searched his bags according to posted US Coast Guard policy before boarding a municipal ferry to cross the river.
I also remember retail horror stories from friends, one of whom was bear maced by a violent shoplifter at the register.
'Hood Warfare' begins in the inner-city but easily erupts in any vicinity, including a Sonic drive-in of all places.
While an outside ideology enables this warfare by stopping parental and school discipline alongside opposing adult charges for felony juvenile combatants, it's internal, community opposition which will win the day.
Whether it's calling out violent community traitors, chasing off trespassers and loiterers or doing volunteer safety escorts for female friends, I know 'hood warfare' won't end until we make it stop, starting with me.
This is the often-quoted 'war outside of my door,' abetted by outsiders, that nonetheless must be fought by community insiders I refer to as 'Black people with sense.'
Senseless Black people like this young murder suspect make their intentions known daily with brutal clarity.
Anyone who says there are senseless members in every community make my point unintentionally.
I'm addressing ones nearest to me, which is my first duty.
