Inhofe Exposes Latest Obama-EPA Gas Tax Attempt

Link to Letter Link to Press Release Washington, D.C. - Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, sent a letter last night to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson expressing concern that EPA is moving forward with its global warming agenda despite the fact that emissions of fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) would increase significantly under EPA's greenhouse gas regulations for cars. To hide this increase in pollution, EPA is pushing ahead with Tier 3 regulations, which could add up to 25 cents per gallon to the cost of gasoline. Furthermore, contrary to President Obama's claims to support natural gas, his EPA's greenhouse gas regime has erected regulatory barriers that are effectively capping the number of Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs) being introduced in the market.

"The Obama-EPA is moving forward with rules that will lead to consumers paying an additional 25 cents per gallon at the pump," Senator Inhofe said. "As Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, and a chief critic of the Obama-EPA's war on affordable energy, I demand that the agency fully explain its justification for this massive gas tax increase. "President Obama and his EPA are so focused on their crown jewel - greenhouse gas regulations - that real pollutants have been pushed to the wayside: EPA has admitted that its rules to decrease greenhouse gases will increase fine particulate matter by nearly 20,000 tons by 2025. This, by the way, goes completely against the intent of the Clean Air Act - protecting public health - which is supposedly the primary focus of the EPA. To fix this inconvenient fact, EPA has decided to use its discretion to tighten a separate regulation, known as Tier 3, that will directly impact refiners. The end result? A massive gas tax on American families at a time when gas prices are skyrocketing. "And if the barrage of EPA rules taxing gas and electricity are not enough to show that President Obama's claim to be for an all-above approach to energy development is a lie, this rule sets up regulatory barriers that prevent natural gas vehicles from being introduced into the market, while his EPA also threatens to curtail natural gas production through new greenhouse gas regulations for hydraulic fracturing. "The truth is clear: President Obama doesn't support an all-of -the-above approach. His greenhouse gas regime is, in fact, an aggressive and concentrated effort to eliminate oil, gas and coal at any cost, with little concern for the increase in real pollutants or the impact of skyrocketing gas prices on American families."
