Legislating “Fairness”

The President yammers about "fair" in every speech, multiple times. I got to thinking about the word.

So, I looked it up. The word "fair" has many meaning but the closest to the President's use is "reasonable or unbiased". So I looked up "equitable" which referred me to "fair". Finally I looked up "equal" which said "identical in size, quantity, value or standard". What the President means every time he says the word fair is equal. He wants us all to be equal and he doesn't care if that is fair to anyone. From different sources, you will discover that about 1% of Americans are millionaires but nearly 50% of the United States House and Senate members are millionaires. That is neither fair nor equal. Yet I have not heard a proposal from the President that includes reform of the insider trading benefits that Congressmen and Senators enjoy. I haven't heard a proposal for campaign reform. This President's actions belie his words. I learned when I was very young that life isn't fair and that we aren't all equal in areas like wealth, talent, beauty, or brains. With that I learned to work hard, not to be jealous, gratitude for what I did have and compassion for those less fortunate than I. You cannot legislate fairness. It can't and won't work. We are a Republic not a Socialist country. The President needs to remember that. Bruce Butler Englewood, FL
