Margaret Thatcher once observed that the trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money
Socialism's sacrifice, when it isn't chosen, is enforced--if we are not moved by duty, we will be moved by force. Christianity's sacrifice is never coerced; it flows from having received a sacrificial love we didn't earn, and it compels us in turn to give our lives for others (Rom. 12:1–2). So the “common thing” is this: both systems recognize that a good society cannot run on self-interest alone--someone has to give beyond what's fair to them individually. Where they divide is over whether that giving can be commanded into existence or must be freely given in response to love.
Jesus could have claimed His deity at any point during His earthly ministry and avoided the cross. Instead, He waited until His resurrection to claim His authority (Matt. 28:18–20), so that His disciples could carry the news of that sacrifice throughout the world. Those who claim it as their own (Rom. 10:9–10) will live with Him forever.
Margaret Thatcher once observed that the trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money (Perry, 2020). Classical socialist systems, in the end, cannot meet the varying needs of their citizens. Christianity's Master can supply all our needs, according to His riches in glory (Phil. 4:19).
