Washington, D.C., is known for sour grapes and bad vibes, but more recently, the foul smell coming from our nation's capital is, believe it or not, coming from a good thing.
Yes, the capital has gone from sour grapes to sauerkraut, and from all reports, that’s a great thing. Sulfurous odors aside, the probiotic and protein-based diet is proving to be a hit on Capitol Hill.
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. began the diet about a year ago after meeting Dr. Sean O'Mara, a physician who spent years advising senior government officials, including those in the Bush White House, before transitioning to private practice.
Dr. O'Mara's approach is centered around one key concept: visceral fat is the enemy. This type of fat accumulates around vital organs and contributes to chronic inflammation and heart disease, yet it is not detected on a bathroom scale.
To identify visceral fat, O'Mara uses full-body MRIs, and then he creates a tailored protocol to eliminate it. Following this protocol, Kennedy lost 20 pounds in just 30 days.
Additionally, the diet helped eliminate the atrial fibrillations he had been experiencing and relieved chronic aches and pains that had become a part of his daily life.
Kennedy first convinced Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick during their December 2025 trip to Colorado, when they discussed diet. Lutnick had been avoiding red meat for years due to concerns about cancer. Now, he is fermenting his own vegetables at home and has replaced Diet Coke with plain iced coffee.
Next, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy joined the effort. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy noticed the changes in Duffy before anyone informed him of Duffy's new lifestyle; he commented on Duffy's glowing skin after spotting him at an event.
Curious about what Duffy was doing, McCarthy asked, and what Duffy shared with him triggered a chain reaction that took everyone in Washington by surprise.
McCarthy is currently following the diet and has lost four inches from his waist.
Vice President J.D. Vance initially signed up just for Lent earlier this year; however, he has continued to follow the diet. Vance's typical lunch is eggs, sauerkraut, pickles, blackberries, and raspberries. Dinner is beef or lamb with sauerkraut.
On Air Force Two, he enjoys grass-fed beef jerky or a burger without a bun, accompanied by fermented vegetables.
Kennedy stated at a Michigan event this week: "JD Vance is also on the diet, and you can see how different he looks."
Photos of Vance from earlier this month flooded social media, sparking comments about his transformation.
Now, cabinet members even share tips with each other when they gather at the White House.
Kennedy is so into the diet that he carries his beloved sauerkraut everywhere he goes, but his wife, Cheryl Hines, has started refusing his requests to place the bag in her nice purse.
In January, Kennedy and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, marking the first major overhaul to explicitly emphasize fermented foods and gut microbiome health as national priorities.
In fact, the new food pyramid inverted the old one: proteins and healthy fats at the top, while ultra-processed grains remain at the bottom.

Kennedy stated clearly: "The new framework focuses on proteins, healthy fats, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains."
The official nutritional policy of the United States government is based on the same science O'Mara has implemented with Cabinet-level patients.
O’Mara has strong dietary priorities, which Kennedy is sharing with the nation. His private practice charges $8,000 for an optimization plan and $18,000 for a direct consultation, which the country is benefitting from for free.
Another great aspect of O’Mara is his deep appreciation for the elderly. Unlike many physicians, he offers a unique perspective on those whom other doctors sometimes regard as collateral damage. He loves working with older patients because the return is so much greater. He says it’s: "like taking over a sinking ship, or a company that is headed to bankruptcy."
Let’s face it, the so-called “Food Pyramid” was totally out of date. More and more foods are processed and contain ingredients that we can’t even identify. This offers a fresh look at nutrition that the nation is taking seriously. The one constant in life is change, and this one is going to be a good one. MAHA, no matter how much the left detests it, is a great direction for the country.
