With Ontario's debt blowing past $300 billion this past year, it's high time the government reined in employee compensation cost

Sunshine List Shows Big Jump in Bureaucrat Pay

TORONTO, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) calling on the government to get a grip on bureaucrat pay, after todays release of the Sunshine List of government employees earning more than $100,000 has grown by 7 per cent in the last year. This year's list, released on March 31, 2017, shows that the number of bureaucrats earning six figures has a record 123,410 government employees on it.
"Pay and benefits for government employees is the largest chunk of the government's budget, and they can't keep expanding that line item at this pace," said CTF Ontario Director, Christine Van Geyn. The Sunshine List has continued to grow, despite it no longer including hundreds of employees at the now private Hydro One. The top earner on the list was Ontario Power Generation CEO Jeff Lyash, who made $1.16 million. "When many Ontarians struggle to keep their lights on, it really rubs people the wrong way to see the head of OPG earning over seven figures, let alone the other 7,729 OPG employees on the list," continued Van Geyn. The CTF is calling on the Ontario government to get a grip on government employee compensation. The Saskatchewan government recently announced they would be negotiating a 3.5 per cent reduction in government employee compensation. "With Ontario's debt blowing past $300 billion this past year, it's high time the government reined in employee compensation cost," continued Van Geyn. "Regular Ontarians have average weekly earnings of $963, or $50,000 per year. When more than 123,000 government employees are earning twice that on the taxpayer dime, making some cuts should be a no brainer."
