Thankful for good neighbours
St. Catharines Standard February 7, 2011
I was driving my wife on our country roads after the recent storm that dumped tonnes of snow on Niagara, when our car got stuck in snow. The wheels kept spinning and spinning. We were stranded on an isolated stretch of the road, with the nearest house far away. We are senior citizens and do not have the strength to push the car out or walk miles on icy roads seeking help. We prayed.
Then we were about to call CAA on the cellphone when we saw a pickup truck approaching us. I waved frantically for the driver to stop. He cheerfully greeted us, promptly got down to business and got our car out in a jiffy, using the pickup equipment.
We were overjoyed, in seventh heaven! We offered to reward him for this much-needed help. He gracefully declined.
I gave him my calling card but, unfortunately, he did not give us his name, and went cheerily on his way, having possibly saved our lives (we had read in The Standard of that poor woman in Toronto who froze to death outside her home recently.)
So, bless you, dear gentleman, whoever you are!
He reminded us of the Good Samaritan in the Bible who saved the lives of people in need along the highway.
We live in the country (God's Green Earth) and humbly try to practise the quintessential Christian virtue of "Love Thy Neighbour!"
We love our neighbours and help each other out in need. For example, after snowstorms our good neighbours invariably help us old folks by clearing out our long driveway with their trusty tractors.
