In 1958 when the poll was started, Pew Research reported that 73% of Americans had confidence in the United States government. However, in 2025, Pew Research shows that only 17% of Americans have confidence in government. I am assuming this data zeros in on the elected officials of government since they are the nominal decision makers for “government.”
Ballotpedia reports that in January 2026, the congressional approval rating is a whopping 15%, meaning that 85% of Americans are not happy with what Congress is doing or failing to do.
"Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder." ~ George Washington
As indicated in the Washington quote above and other writings of the founders, the Founding Fathers were well aware of historic human weaknesses. So, some level of corruption has probably been a part of the American political scene from the get-go. However, it has only been in the last 50 years or so that a pauper could get elected to Congress and in just one or two terms become a millionaire on a $174,000 annual congressional salary. That doesn’t pass the smell test.
To date only about 23% of Congress has signed on to cosponsor a Term Limits constitutional amendment bill. This fact suggests the main reason so few in Congress want to see term limits imposed is because it would break their corruption rice bowl.
"This [the U.S. Constitution] is likely to be administered for a course of years and then end in despotism... when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other." ~ Benjamin Franklin
Ben Franklin foresaw the socialist Democrat Biden/autopen administration more than 250 years ago. The reelection of President Trump broke up that despotic government, at least for the moment. The question is: What happens after Trump?
"I think myself that we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious. Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have ... The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases. The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first." ~ Thomas Jefferson
It would appear that Jefferson’s caution was not heeded by the American people, and Congress has indeed become a “legalized version” of criminality. It would also seem the majority of Congress is comfortable selling themselves to Washington’s (the president, not the city) highest bidder. Sadly, the highest bidder is not the American taxpayers who elected them to their high positions.
"You know well that government always kept a kind of standing army of news writers (media) who, without any regard to truth or to what should be like truth, invented and put into the papers (media) whatever might serve the [government] ministers. This suffices with the mass of the people who have no means of distinguishing the false from the true paragraphs of a newspaper (media)." ~ Thomas Jefferson (media) added by author
Therein lies a major problem for the American voters. The mainstream media is kowtowing to the socialist Democrat Party and have adopted the New York Time editorial standards: “The truth is so limiting.”
The mainstream media is nothing more than the propaganda arm of the socialist Democrat Party, just as Pravda was to the old Soviet Union. That, and the fact that two or three generations of American have been taught what to think, rather than how to think. America is in deep trouble, which may be too deep to recover from.
"When once a Republic is corrupted, there is no possibility of remedying any of the growing evils but by removing the corruption and restoring its lost principles; every other correction is either useless or a new evil." ~ Thomas Jefferson
Minnesota is the perfect demonstration of how much trouble America is in. The despots governing that state may force President Trump to impose very harsh measures to regain federal control. That is something I would rather not see because of the precedent it sets for the evil of the next despotic United States president. However, law and order must be reestablished in Minnesota. There is true danger there, if that isn’t done.
"Now, mark my words. So long as we are a young and virtuous people, this instrument (the Constitution) will bind us together in mutual interests, mutual welfare, and mutual happiness. But when we become old and corrupt, it will bind no longer." ~ Alexander Hamilton
"It is in the interest of tyrants to reduce the people to ignorance and vice. For they cannot live in any country where virtue and knowledge prevail." ~ Samuel Adams
The United States Constitution is in danger because there are too many corrupt politicians at all levels of government and too many government-dependent non-government agencies that have found it easy to defraud American taxpayers. I am not clear if America has passed the tipping point for recovery or not. Are there enough virtuous people left in America to turn the ship of corruption around? I hope so, or the entire world, not just America, is in for a despotic high-tech version of the Dark Ages.
Patriotic Americans, the first step to reducing the dangers that currently exists is to severely limit the number of socialist Democrats elected in the November 3, 2026, midterm election. That could very well be the tipping point that must be avoided at all costs. Your grandchildren’s and the world’s quality of life depend on it. Without America, there will be no free world.
