A separatist group is asking for Trump’s help to split from Canada. Here’s what we know

This article reminds me of a conversation I had last year with a charming Canadian couple from Alberta.

They confirmed that it's a conservative enclave whose populace would largely welcome American citizenship or alliance as a newborn nation.

Their disdain for former Liberal Party Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is shared by many in that province.

While statehood talk has receded, Alberta separatists are reportedly meeting with US State Department officials to discuss backing for an independent Alberta, one closely aligned with this country.

While it would be quite a blow to Canadian sovereignty and control of regional oil, it would be quite a coup for the Trump administration.

If that couple are any indication, the American right would gain like-minded allies should Alberta leave Canada to go it alone.

The enjoyable pair promise a literate, reserved addition to the 'non left' on this side of the North American continent.

Time will tell whether independence or an implausible great state of Alberta, USA, are in the making.
