“A spot in my brain, something That may be squeezed out, like a Watermelon seed between Two fingers. Pop takes another shot, neat, Points out the same amber Stain on his shorts that I’ve got on mine, and Makes me smell his smell, coming”Cashill cites a blog comment from a therapist about the possible reference to outright sexual abuse: “Writes the therapist, who chooses to remain anonymous, ‘[This incident] may be describing outright sexual abuse. But perhaps not; we don't know, and we'll never know. But there is no question that the poem is describing a boundary violation on several levels: this child feels invaded-perhaps even taken over-by this man, and is fighting against that sensation.’” Cashill questions whether Obama or Davis wrote the poem. When compared to a companion piece, a masterpiece titled “Underground”, the disparity between the two poets’ literary gifts becomes more obvious:
“Under water grottos, caverns Filled with apes That eat figs. Stepping on the figs That the apes Eat, they crunch. The apes howl, bare Their fangs, dance, Tumble in the Rushing water, Musty, wet pelts Glistening in the blue.”If Davis indeed wrote “Pop”, Cashill postulates it was an expression of his distress at losing young Barry to the “lures of the mainland.” Whether “Pop” was written by Obama himself or by Davis; it certainly does not reflect a healthy adult/child relationship. Nor does it speak well of the sole adult male relative responsible for Obama’s upbringing, Stanley Dunham. Stanley Dunham’s relationship with Davis reflects an appalling lack of appropriate boundaries. If two grown ne’er-do-wells chose to waste their time drinking, smoking pot, and spewing hate, so be it; but as the alleged adult, Dunham was way out of line exposing a child of ten to such an influence as Frank Marshall Davis. We likely will never know all of the details of each meeting between Obama and Davis over the years. Obama himself may not have entirely accurate recollections; such is the nature of extreme experiences in childhood. The very best we can say is that his grandfather failed to provide a healthy role model for the impressionable child. Exposing a child to race hating, communist ideology, along with all manners of sexual perversion, is child abuse and can be expected to have a lasting influence.
