US Supreme Court Agrees Restraining Orders Need Some Teeth

Supreme Court upholds a gun control law intended to protect domestic violence victims (AP NEWS, June 21, 2024)

Anyone with passing familiarity of my safety creator role knows I could be considered 'pro gun' in mainstream terms.

The victim advocacy part of my safety creation theory includes urging domestic abuse victims to get restraining orders against violent partners. Consequences even after doing so can end tragically.

Sometimes agencies close to home tasked with investigating these crimes fumble the ball, as this New Orleans Police Department case shows:

It's through this lens that I assessed a recent US Supreme Court decision to uphold firearms bans on individuals with restraining orders filed against them.

They agree with me way down here on the "chitlin' circuit" and other grassroots advocates that restraining orders need some teeth to keep bad relationships from becoming fatal ones.
