I draw inspiration from myriad sources, ancient texts, self development content, biographies and especially modern comic book fiction, with the Batman being a looming archetype. It's with this in mind that a college freshman version of me enthusiastically absorbed Frank Miller's 1986 graphic novel masterpiece, 'Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
Against the backdrop of spreading chaos inflicted on my community during the eighties crack cocaine invasion, Miller's vision of a retired Bruce Wayne taking on a rampaging street gang was especially resonant. Returning the character to his grim roots was game changing not only for the superhero genre but also creative political commentary which was central to the series.
Fast forward to a 60-year-old me in 2026 and the above image of a wounded, grizzled Batman fighting young urban terrorists resonates even more deeply. As a 'Gen Xer' motivated by the early twenty-first century 'real life superhero' or RLSH boom to offer his activist interpretation, 'Batman: The Dark Knight Returns' provides added impetus.
The series famously showcased the appeal and danger of vigilantism. It also highlighted how a lone figure can impact an overwhelmed public and even reform previously incorrigible young criminals.
In hindsight, this graphic novel still impacts my 'real life super helper' ('real lifer') take on the RLSH concept to this very day.
I paused to reflect for a second. A major difference between myself and the Dark Knight is I don't do vigilantism. Not a growth industry for Black men in the South nor anywhere else. However, I do promote active mobilization of citizens within the law to address crime and other challenges--minus a cape and cowl, of course.

As intended, I've embedded my concept beside working class community members who can't afford personal assistants and bodyguards and motivate demotivated crime victims through an unsympathetic system as part of promoting a 'larger vision' of ourselves, to borrow a phrase coined by master motivational speaker Les Brown.
I sometimes add the tagline, 'fiction inspires my facts' to social media posts about heroic tales and other genres. This towering piece of fiction definitely serves as inspiration for my 'real lifer' advocacy.
No cape. No cowl. Just creative advocacy and my trademark scowl.<1000004208.jpg>
