College athlete gets shot five times by Oregon police, who mistook him for his knife-wielding brother

21-year-old Maverick Lyon was seen emerging from his home before being shot by police after he escaped from his knife-wielding brother

"You guys shot the wrong guy... he was holding me hostage," Lyon said after being shot.

Maverick's brother, Dakota, had relapsed on drugs following knee surgery and began acting delusional. After the brothers had breakfast together, Dakota grabbed a knife and held Maverick hostage.

At some point, Maverick picked up a kitchen knife himself to protect himself from his brother.

Their father, who was not home, became concerned when Maverick wasn't returning his calls and checked the Ring camera to see Dakota threatening his brother with a knife.

He called the police and told them that Maverick was wearing a gray long-sleeve shirt and Dakota was shirtless.

When the brothers saw an officer in the backyard, Maverick decided to make a run for it to the front door but was met with police gunfire.

He was seen dropping the knife as he emerged from the home.

Maverick spent a month in the hospital, had part of his lung, his appendix, and his spleen removed, and needed digestive system reconstructive surgery.

He had played lacrosse at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire.

Dakota has been sentenced to over six years in prison. He feels remorseful and says he wishes he had been shot and not his brother.

Maverick has launched a lawsuit against the Albany Police Department.
