Eighty-eight per cent of Canadian minimum-wage earners do not live in low-income households

Raising the minimum wage will do little to reduce poverty


VANCOUVER—Raising the minimum wage will do little to reduce poverty mainly because most minimum-wage earners don’t live in low-income households, finds a new study released today by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank. “Despite good intentions, the evidence shows increasing the minimum wage is not an effective policy for helping Canadians struggling with poverty,” said Charles Lammam, director of fiscal studies at the Fraser Institute and co-author of Raising the Minimum Wage: Misguided Policy, Unintended Consequences.
