ROME — Father Gustavo Gutiérrez, the Peruvian theologian widely regarded as the father of Liberation Theology, passed away Tuesday, leaving behind a mixed legacy of faith, social justice, and Marxism.
Born on June 8, 1928, in Lima, Gutiérrez is best known for his groundbreaking work A Theology of Liberation (1971), from which Liberation Theology takes its name, and which reinvisioned the role of the Church in Latin America through a Marxist lens. ---More...
