Fellow Americans:
The most famous, respected, celebrated and longest-living legend in the history of the United States – the American Flag – celebrates its 240th Birthday today.
On June 14, 1777, during the American Revolution, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white” and that “the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.”
The United States has a standard of Citizenship that is based on equality, yet there is no flag or banner that is equal to or even remotely comparable with the American Flag, which stands alone in rank, order, importance, respect and reverence.
