G'Day Viv,

It was back in the '60's, I did get to know one chap rather well. We spent a couple of days together in the bush outside Darwin. He's passed away so I won't name him, but if your familiar with the movie "Jedda" you know who I'm talking about. I was 'the student', he 'the teacher'. A lot of talking and I learned a lot. I was brought up in Brisbane and my only exposure there was in the park at South Brisbane station. Not the best. In Darwin, spent a lot of my time in the Bamboo Lounge of the Don Hotel. That in itself was a education. Keep up the good work.

I worked in NT (Rum Jungle) in 1959 and then at El Sherana and Bathurst Island in 1966. We had two aboriginal helpers on Bathurst Island. They showed us how to find crocodile eggs and we made them into omelettes.

Was working seismic oil exploration near Broome and took three two week breaks in Darwin. Did learn that stingray flap tastes like caviar, but I needed a bunch of toilet paper next morning. That was on the second visit.
The third, I visited my mentor in the TB ward in Darwin. Then the crew I was on moved south to just inland from Fremantle. I was on Borneo when I heard about his death.
As I go back through my memories, those days in the scrub might have started me thinking about low-impact living. Big cities? Not for me.
