Musical Perfection The Last Rose of Summer

October 16 in the Heartland

The bloom appeared just yesterday and I had to take a photo. All around were the beginnings of gold and carmine in the trees, the white pines holding firm with their evergreen needles. There in the rose bed was what has to be the last gallant effort of the horticultural year. The heavy buds opened with no bugs to bother them and stayed open all night, hoping for enough sun in the morning to attract the notice of the honeybees otherwise gleaning from the last of the calico asters. This morning they’re perfection itself, with old fashioned sweetness in their scent.

Autumn is NOT everybody's favorite season, Dr. Smith. We are just two months past the best, by far, month of all, August. It's always puzzled me why some people love autumn. It's the season of dying (followed by the very worst season, winter, the season of death). Why wouldn't people prefer summer, the high season of all life?

But your eulogy to the last rose is wonderful, nonetheless. Yet, why doesn't someone do a celebration of that cluster of petunias with raindrops on them in the balmy warmth of a fragrant summer afternoon?

That song is so beautiful! I have seen Celtic Women perform before, but I don't know that I ever heard that song. Autumn is the beginning of new joys - gold, yellow, and red leaves. Hearing the crunch under your feet. It is a wonderful time of year for our senses. However, as I am putting outdoor things away for the winter, I am saying goodbye to those last precious things. I am in North Dakota and this year is like none other I have experienced for my petunias. They are STILL blooming their last blooms. They have never lasted this long in my life! I want them to go away so I can fill the area with pumpkins and chrysanthemums, but I have to celebrate the long life of my petunias. A rare occasion.
Thank you for the song. It is so rich and wonderful!
