Nostalgic Spring Beauty

Swallowtail Butterflies

A wise history professor once told me “Things have not always been as they are today.” This is true in many ways. Certainly the technology is different. We live lives of comparative ease and travel much more than was possible not so long ago.

Our aesthetic notions have changed, too. Animal and plant breeding have brought us many improvements that have changed our lives for the better. Sometimes the world gets better year to year.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful post, Bruce. Peonies are my absolute favorite but I've found them so hard to grow up here in the Northeast. I must have be doing something wrong because my neighbors seem successful. This year I've tried planting them in more shallow soil and in better sun. I hope that helps! Are all these flowers from your yard? Lilac is also one of my favorites and I have several lilac trees in my yard. I always forget the difference between lilac and lavender. Either way, the smell is heavenly. I appreciate a post dedicated to spring because up here in New England, it is a sign that warmer, longer days are coming after a long, dark, freezing winter. I love understanding the rhythm and cycle of my perennials now that I"ve been at my house for 3+ years. I have a Japanese Cherry Tree in my yard that blooms with bright pink flowers and during those two weeks of blooming it is Mother's Day and my birthday which is very cool.

We were living up in the mountains of Oregon. Its own special charm, but no flowers and no lawns. Haven't had to mow in almost 2 decades. Now we have moved to North Dakota and it is bursting with life. Lilacs surround our home. Pink Peonies grow thick here. Even with my allergies, I was delighted to bring them indoors in a vase - something I have never been able to do before. Fresh flowers in my own home. The house smelled fresh and fragrant. Flowers that remind me of my home? In Los Angeles, the on-ramps and off-ramps to the freeways are thick with green ivy and a tall, periwinkle colored flower. I can't think of the name of it offhand. My mother had a periwinkle sweater that I started wearing when I was big enough to start borrowing her clothes. She wore Chanel #5. I remember burying my head in my arm (trying not to let the teacher know I was hoping to sleep) I still remember her scent on a lazy afternoon during last period. To this day when I see those flowers or pictures of them, I remember the smell of my mother comforting me during science class. Smells and colors stay with you for a lifetime.
