Up until 2005 investor speculation in popular American retirement states like Florida, California and Arizona was rampant. Investors repeatedly bought and re-sold properties to other investors, hoping to profit from the retiring billion person strong baby boomer generation. Property values soared in these places, creating a massive bubble.
