AUSTIN, TX -- Governor Greg Abbott has signed into law HB 16, known as the Texas Born-Alive Infant Protection Act, which ensures legal protection for infants born alive in attempted abortions.The law will go into effect September 1, 2019.
The legislation states, “The physician must exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious physician would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age.” HB 16 also requires a physician to ensure that the infant be immediately transferred and admitted to a hospital.
