Storing food

Just wanted to drop you folks a line. I have enjoyed your column for a while. Being and old "Cracker" myself, I was born and raised in De Land. I have closely read your writings on food storage. It brought back memories. You see we thought store bought canned goods were a luxury! My Granddad would plant field peas in his orange grove, my Grannie and I would spend hours "stripping" peas for storage. He traded oranges for molasses, pecans, beans, well you get the picture and my Grannie would put them up.
I live in New Orleans now but, still have a place in De Land. Our orange grove has been decimated by citrus greening and "other" diseases. We are now planting watermelons until we come up with another crop. Guavas and oranges go well together to fight the Asian diseases that are killing all the trees. At 62, I have lots of ideas and not so much time.
