From: Larry Just wanted to drop you folks a line. I have enjoyed your column for a while. Being and old "Cracker" myself, I was born and raised in De Land. I have closely read your writings on food storage. It brought back memories. You see we thought store bought canned goods were a luxury! My Granddad would plant field peas in his orange grove, my Grannie and I would spend hours "stripping" peas for storage. He traded oranges for molasses, pecans, beans, well you get the picture and my Grannie would put them up. I live in New Orleans now but, still have a place in De Land. Our orange grove has been decimated by citrus greening and "other" diseases. We are now planting watermelons until we come up with another crop. Guavas and oranges go well together to fight the Asian diseases that are killing all the trees. At 62, I have lots of ideas and not so much time. Thank you for your articles.

**Good morning Larry! Those were the days, weren't they? I, too remember Granddaddy planting peas in the grove or broadcasting ‘em at the end of the rows. How'd you end up in New Orleans, work related, or married a "Southern Belle" with tons of money? This was part of my life's ambition, marrying into lots of money!!  LOL! No sir, in all honesty we've been very blessed in our lives, and very content in it. I love Deb, she loves me, 5 great children, and 7 wonderful grandchildren. Everyone in good health, and food on the table...Yes sir Larry, life is good! Also, were you living in New Orleans during Katrina? Probably not during, but also wondering about the aftermath. Any input in this regard? Thank you so much for your comments Larry, they stirred our own memories. Please come back again! Go Gators, unless you’re a Seminole or Hurricane fan. If that’s the case, then…GO GATORS!! Dub and Deb From: Craig I bought a few more items for my food storage today. I was happy to learn that white rice at 40F can last as long as 30 years. I also found a company in Alberta that sells some survival things, food and gadgets.   They sell the Aqua Rain gravity fed water purifier with ceramic cartridges.  I would prefer the Black Berkey, which is very similar but don’t want to deal with border issues and customs duty.  They (Briden solutions) also sell the Volcano stove which can cook with wood, charcoal or propane.  I’ve got these 2 items on my list as well as a striker to start fires with.  I also need to get a manual grinding mill and a coffee pot that doesn’t require electricity.  I added a bunch of stuff to my wish list from their web site and so far the total comes out to around $1,500!  Ouch.  Do you store reserves of gasoline on your property?  If so, what is the safest way to do that? Well, that’s all I’ve got for today old boy.  I thought the joke about the hillbilly hunter was hilarious. **Hey Craig! Good hearing from you again! Thanks for coming back by and dropping us a line. I see you’re asking about gas storage and how to do it safely, well, we’re in the same boat here, old boy, up the creek without a paddle. Hopefully we’ll have some reader input to help resolve this problem for the two of us! Dub

Dub and Deb——

‘Ridin Out The Recession With Dub and Deb in “Miz Judi’s Kitchen’!

Note to Readers: There are a few things that Dub doesn’t know but one thing he does know is that the word ‘Riding’ (as in Riding Out the Recession) is spelled with a ‘g’ at the end.  But Dub not only walks the walk, but speaks like he is: down home, true blue, and plain speakin’ country folk.

Dub and Deb are both native Floridians, live in Central Florida, and run a small business as well. They have five children, and seven grandchildren.

Both love to cook, love to laugh, grow a garden, and generally try to “aggravate” most anyone around them basically…all in good fun, of course!
