The mayor of Seattle announced recently, and with great fanfare, that the city is suing President Trump and just about everyone else you can think of in the administration. Why? Because they want to deny federal funds to cities that assist people in breaking the law.
Cities like Seattle.
This is what the mayor really means when he refers to Seattle's "sanctuary status." There is actually no such status that has any sort of legal meaning. When you're a sanctuary city, what that means is that lawbreaking illegal immigrants can come into your city and hide, and none one who works for the city will do anything to help federal immigration officials in detecting you and holding you to account for your lawbreaking.
