Many moons ago hard left Toronto City Councillor Jack Layton, later leader of the Canadian New Democrat Party (NDP), accused Yours Truly of “seeing a commie behind every tree”. Layton, who passed in 2011 was almost right: I did see a blankety-blank commie behind almost every tree. In those yesteryear days when I was still education columnist for the feisty Toronto Sun, I was once able to turn the tables on Layton and his charge.
