In the post-World War II era, Democrats were labeled as the political party that represented average Americans. Democrats were credited with fighting for the rights of the working-class, minorities, women, and the disadvantaged.
In contrast, the Republicans were supposedly the party of the country club elitists, the Chamber of Commerce, and the business tycoons looking to garner favors from the government.

The dems are, and have been for a long time, the party of the elites. For a long time the dems were against big government, big business, big everything. They were for the little guy. Now they are owned by big everything and they look at the rest of us like lab rats.
