Survival in Tough Times: We should not let a day go by that we don’t thank our lucky stars that we came along after the miracle of the Industrial Revolution

The Tyranny of the Seasons

The occasion of a storm, especially if it brings a power outage, has always been an opportunity for reflection, at least to me.

On Thursday we had a significant weather event. A bow-shaped line of severe storms plowed left-to-right across our part of the Heartland bringing much needed rain for thirsty crops and gardens. As it arrived, tall trees in the woods bent to their upper trunks under a roaring wind and rain pelted the hard ground. Down in protected valleys and up on the more level ground, branches snapped and roots came up from the ground as big tops fell, leaving widespread power outages. As in the old song from years back, the lightning danced about. The top of a big beech fell toward a smaller one which snapped and came down on our little branch power line. Everybody down our way went dark and stayed that way all night.

Interesting article, but for one thing. I have never 'thanked my lucky stars' for things we take for granted. I thank my Lord and Savior/God every day for what I have now, compared to some. We need to thank God every day of our lives for our existence, our everyday living situations, and what he blessed our countries with - for which we forgot to thank Him. I hope your power came on soon, as I've experienced this in the past and it's not fun. Nine days in the middle of ice-storm winter and eight days one very hot, humid summer in which we lost everything in our freezer. However, for a short time, it made us more grateful. In those days, though, it was a GAS stove then got us through the winter. I wonder if a solar panel or windmill nearby will help with the next one.

When I hear a kid complain because they have to take out the trash or empty the dishwasher, I think about how soft we have become. Technology and industry are a curse and a blessing at the same time. I know many moms work full time and still come home to make dinner. In pioneer days they were home with the children, but think of how many hours it took to do the laundry, split the wood for the fire to make dinner. Moms didn't have the TIME to go to work outside the home! Kids didn't have a lot of time to get into trouble back then. Chores kept them busy and off the streets. All ages of civilization have had their good things and bad. We don't realize how good we have it until we do lose power. I would love to see an EMP that only took out cell phones. Some people would have coronaries! You would actually have to talk to people in real life.
