According to Hanson, President Cyril Ramaphosa wasn’t just looking for diplomacy.

He was desperate to keep the U.S. perks he had been granted flowing:

“He wanted to meet Trump because he had a free trade agreement with the United States with NO tariffs placed on South African agriculture. Everything. Metals, everything.”

Not only that—Ramaphosa was sitting on a $9 billion surplus while collecting $500 million in U.S. foreign aid.

“And in addition to that,” Hanson said, “he was getting $500 million in foreign aid from the United States.”

And yet, despite all that, his ambassador publicly smeared Trump as a white supremacist.

“In a performance art fashion,” Hanson said, “he made a video and said Donald Trump was a white supremacist.”

That ambassador was later expelled by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

When you connect the dots, it’s clear why Ramaphosa came crawling back.

He wasn’t looking to make peace.

He was trying to protect a sweetheart deal—and avoid the consequences of biting the hand that fed him.
