Today is the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed 3,000 of my fellow-Americans. The very thought sends chills down my spine. Just like the assassination of JFK, the event is burned into my memory as though it happened yesterday.
I remember exactly where I was, and what I was doing, when I heard the news. I remember just how I felt: like someone had punched me in the stomach. The rest of that day – even that week – are a collection of quick “snapshots” of horrific scenes, suffering people, chilling sounds, heartbreaking words - and shocked, disjointed thoughts, stored in my head permanently. I could no more get rid of them than I could stop breathing. They are a part of me now.
However, from every direction, we hear calls to “move on” past the attacks of 9/11, and to seek some vague “unity” – with whom I’m not sure. Are we to “unify” ourselves with those who murdered our kin? Are we to “unify” ourselves with those who seek to wipe out our way of life, and force us into servitude?
Whatever it is that Mr. Obama wants, I just wanted to let him know that I have “moved on”. I am no longer that naïve woman who thought herself and her loved ones safe from foreign aggression. I know better now.
Therefore, I have educated and informed myself about those foreign enemies who attacked us that day: what they believe, how they operate, the goals they pursue. I have learned to watch for them, and to be mindful of strangers who behave in a suspicious manner in public places.
I have learned to recognize the signs of a poisoned gas, chemical, biological or nuclear attack, and have studied the best ways to shelter from such an attack. And I have acquired, as well as possible, the supplies and personal skills necessary to provide for my loved ones and me afterward.
Oh, yes. I have moved on – past ignorance, indifference, shock and inertia – to determination: a deep and abiding, gut-level determination to survive whatever they throw at us, and to defeat them permanently.
And I am actively seeking “unity” – with all other Americans, regardless of their race, age, gender, heritage, or location, who are also determined that they will never kneel to these violent aggressors.
I have moved on to live my life just as I did before - I work, shop, play, travel and enjoy living. I refuse to curtail my activities out of fear of another attack. If a rapid dog comes into your yard, you don’t just hole up in the house, and stay, quaking in fear for the rest of your life, while he lounges in the grass outside your door. You shoot him, cart away his carcass, and go on about your business.
And I have moved on from blindly trusting “the government” to keep me safe - to recognizing the bitter truth: that our government is in the hands of people who couldn’t care less about me and mine. Those people – on both sides of the aisle - serve only themselves, and therefore, they will sell the rest of us down the river in a heartbeat. They will even knuckle to our publicly avowed enemies to achieve their own goals. So it’s up to us to protect ourselves - because no one else will.
Therefore, I have educated and informed myself about those domestic enemies who now attack us from within. I have learned to recognize their names and faces. I have learned about their sordid characters, their politically incestuous relationships, and their dark-of-night attacks against our Christian heritage, our Constitution, our American traditions and values. I’ve learned to recognize their colossal hypocrisy, and their complete lack of integrity.
And I have moved on to live my life just as I did before - I worship as I choose, and make no apology for it. I display my American flag with pride, and dare anyone to tell me that I can’t. I gladly participate in Tea Party events, and celebrations of our national heritage with relish. And I fully exercise the Freedoms guaranteed by our Bill of Rights at every opportunity. After all, rabid dogs come in all flavors, and I’m not going to let one bite me, just because he’s a familiar breed.
Yes, Barack, ole buddy, I have moved on from 9/11. I haven’t forgotten it, and your oily words and flowery phrases are not going to make me forget. However, I have moved on from that half-asleep, dumbed-down, citizen-drone you want me to be – to a wide-awake, steely-eyed Patriot, determined to stand against “all enemies, both foreign and domestic”, or die in the effort. And just in case you haven’t realized it yet, more and more Americans like me are moving on – and our “unity” is growing stronger every day.
So you and your cohorts go right on wringing your hands in angst over how best to “make nice” with people who murdered Americans. Go right on with your meaningless rhetoric. Go right on with your traitorous midnight machinations.
And we will go right on resisting you all, because we’ve moved on – out of the fog and into the cold, clear light of the Truth. We’re not going to forget what happened on 9/11 - and we’re not going to forget the Truth we’ve learned about all of you.
