Bernie Sanders' Campaign

Socialism fails

Let me say right up front, I am a staunch Conservative. But, I have to admit to a grudging admiration for Bernie Sanders.

As a relative outsider, Sanders has managed to gather an army of loyal supporters and has given the Democratic party a headache. He has done it the old fashioned way: boots on the ground, miles of travel, rallies, and a consistent message. Where he and I differ is the message. I know, without a doubt, that taxpayers cannot afford his ideas. Neither could we afford those of Barack Obama. But, my point is, at 72 years old, with a crappy plan, Sanders has put on an impressive campaign. The reason he has been successful is that he tapped into the frustration of the young people who recognize that our system is broken. The way those kids have been raised is that instead of fixing things, you trash them and buy a new one. However, just like with toasters, new ones are rarely better. Our Republic is not a kitchen appliance and will never be replaced by a better system. Look around at countries that purchased the socialist or progressive version. They are failing. Still, Bernie has showed us a bit about how to be an effective campaigner and leader. Michael Chandler
