B’nai Brith Canada TORONTO, June 21, 2010 – B’nai Brith Canada has strongly condemned today’s bombing of a synagogue in the Russian city of Tver. An explosive device went off just outside of the synagogue in Tver early this morning, ripping a hole in its metal door and partially damaging its entrance hall

“On behalf of the Canadian Jewish community, B’nai Brith Canada condemns in the strongest words possible today’s bombing of the shul in Tver, Russia,” said Frank Dimant, B’nai Brith Canada’s Executive Vice President. “The authorities in Russia must start taking the violence and antisemitism directed at the Jewish community seriously. Claiming that acts such as today’s bombing are just ‘hooliganism,’ as the police did, is simply unacceptable. “Some are speculating that the bombing was the work of Russia neo-Nazis who timed the attack to coincide with the upcoming anniversary of the Nazi invasion of Russia. According to the Jewish leadership in Tver, antisemitic graffiti recently appeared on synagogue walls, hate literature against Jews has been circulated in the city and 140 gravestones in the Jewish part of the city cemetery were defaced. This clearly indicates that antisemitism is rising to dangerous levels in Russia, and the authorities must take concerted action in response. “This attack is one more unneeded confirmation that antisemitism is on the rise, both at home and abroad, and that its confrontation must be a top priority.” B’nai Brith Canada has been active in Canada since 1875 as the Jewish community’s foremost human rights agency
