Canadian Government applauded for increased sanctions against Iran

TORONTO, June 22, 2010 – B’nai Brith Canada has applauded the Canadian Government over today’s announcement that Canada will be stepping up sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The new Canadian sanctions will limit Iran’s access to uranium and further restrict its nuclear and missile programs.

“We applaud the Government for taking the important action of further sanctions against the Iranian regime for its nuclear weapons program in defiance of the international community,” said Frank Dimant, B’nai Brith Canada’s Executive Vice President. “Canada and her allies need to do everything in their power to stop the Iranian regime, the world’s top sponsor of terrorism, from developing nuclear arms. Today’s announcement by the Canadian Government is very welcome. “Iranian political and military leaders deny the Holocaust and openly call for the destruction of the Jewish State. Since last year’s sham of an election in Tehran, the regime has brutally murdered and suppressed droves of freedom-seeking Iranians just for aspiring to live in a free society. The world simply cannot sit idly by as the terrorist regime in Tehran arms itself with the most dangerous of weapons. “Today, as our country gets ready to host the G8 and G20 summits, Prime Minister Harper and Foreign Minister Cannon have taken the important step of increasing the pressure on Iran. World leaders who will be gathered here in Canada should follow the lead of Prime Minister Harper and agree to important and concerted action to ensure that Iran’s drive for nuclear weapons is stopped.” B’nai Brith Canada has been active in Canada since 1875 as the Jewish community’s foremost human rights agency
