Chemicals in our food

Cancer and the way of prevention

I don’t have a degree in medicine but through necessity I have learned a lot about the likely causes of cancer. The fact that 1 in 4 people will get cancer in one form or another is a fact of life. It may even be 1 in 3 as I’ve heard recently. I’m not sure of the actual stats but it does not matter really – the incidences of cancer are increasing. How many people have you heard about among your relatives, friends and acquaintances that now have cancer or have died of it? Have you also noticed how often you hear or read that word today?

Besides not having a degree in medicine, neither do I have one in statistics -- however, I would venture to say that if a line on a graph were to be drawn indicating the increase in cancer rates, another line could be drawn alongside it indicating the increase in preservatives and chemicals in our daily food. I would say the probability is that both lines would be rising at the same rate. Chemicals in our food are a fact, not a secret. It has not been hidden. There on every packet and can and label are the ingredients. The law requires them to be displayed in order that we know what we are ingesting. The fact that the lettering is as miniscule as it gets and many times impossible to read because it is printed red on orange, or blue on black, almost says they are trying to hide something. The problem is that one would need a degree in chemistry to understand what any particular substance can do. If you want to find out, here is a website which will tell you the effect that certain food additives, colourings, sweeteners, preservatives, etc., can do, many of them linked to tumours and cancer: put in as an Internet search the following: “12 dangerous food additives.” A list will appear with the first one leading you to a website which lists dangerous additives, many of them causing cancer in laboratory rat experiments. It makes for alarming reading. We are poisoning ourselves. Have you noticed that all the major supermarkets are carrying organic vegetables and fruits, cereals, even soaps and toiletries? This will increase as more people begin to understand what is happening to our food. However, while it is wise, even imperative that we rid our diets of the bad stuff we can help ourselves by ingesting more raw veggies, fruits, nuts and grains. A diet lacking in these basic foods severely deprives the body of nutrients which the immune system needs to fight off disease. The average western diet does not include these nutrients but does include many dangerous chemicals. The result is sickness and disease and a 1 in 4 cancer rate – never mind heart problems, arthritis, insomnia and a host of other problems. Our taste buds dictate our preferences. The food producers will do whatever it takes to accommodate our taste buds by adding chemicals and spraying chemicals. Here are two paragraphs from the website aforementioned: 1. The food colorings that make candy’s pretty colors have been linked to cancer and tumors of the brain, thyroid, adrenal gland and kidney in animal studies. (What do our kids love?) 2. In the United States (and of course Canada), more than 3,000 substances can be added to foods for the purpose of preservation, coloring, texture, increasing flavor and more. While each of these substances is legal to use (at least in the States), whether or not they are all something you want to be consuming is another story all together. Do yourself a favour – retrain your tastebuds and give your body and your children’s bodies the nutrients they need to be healthy. More next week. Michael is a freelance writer in Toronto.
