Correcting Obama

Such abysmal ignorance; it’s frightening

- Bob Caldwell Obama misrepresented history in his press conference Wednesday evening by primly citing Winston Churchill’s purported pledge that the British government would not torture espionage agents caught during World War II in Britain working for the Germans.

If, in fact, Churchill ever said such a thing, he knew that His Majesty’s Government was implementing a far more effective treatment. Virtually every German agent caught in Britain during the war was given a stark choice: Work as a double agent for the British, or be shot. Spies (like terrorists) are not covered by the Geneva Conventions and spying in wartime is a capital offense in most combatant countries, including Britain. Thus did Britain turn virtually the entire German spy network in the UK into British agents working under British supervision to feed misinformation and disinformation back to their German handlers. Obama didn’t tell us that, because he doesn’t know that and neither does the ill-informed White House researcher who fed him this line. Such abysmal ignorance; it’s frightening. Robert Caldwell is the retired Editor of the Insight Section of the San Diego Union Tribune. He is a republican Patriot and an Army Veteran who served in Vietnam.
